About
Welcome to Plantation Oaks Farms
Where history lives, and legacy thrives.
Nestled under the sprawling canopy of ancient live oaks in western Nassau County, Plantation Oaks Farms is a rare living relic of Florida’s earliest settlement days. This land, once part of the Pedro Pons Land Grant during Spain’s colonization in the late 1700s, remains one of the oldest continuously held pieces of private property in Florida. Passed through generations—from Spanish Minorcan settlers to early American pioneers—it tells a uniquely Southern story of perseverance, grit, and deep-rooted tradition.
In the early 1800s, Maria (Mary) Pons married Seymour Pickett, one of the first Virginia settlers to Florida and founder of Pickettville. Their legacy, and that of the land they were entrusted with, has remained remarkably intact. In 1933, WW Hodges Sr. gifted the land to his son and daughter-in-law, Walter Jr. and Helen Beasley Hodges, who unknowingly reunited Helen with her ancestral land. Under their care, the Hodges Poultry Farm was born—a small yet mighty hatchery that operated for decades and was even featured in “Smokey and the Bandit Part 3.”
But the most enduring part of this farm’s story isn’t just the land—it’s the people.
In 1983, Amy Mizell was born, the first direct Mizell daughter in over 150 years. Raised on the stories of her great-grandmother “Nanny,” and nurtured by her grandparents, Amy grew up with a passion for both animals and heritage. After graduating from Auburn University in 2005, Amy returned home to transform her corner of the family land into a thriving equestrian estate.
Today, Plantation Oaks Farms is a full-service horse farm, event venue, and living museum of sorts—where every tree, trail, and timber beam carries a story. Amy and her son Colt actively show APHA horses, proudly representing a family tradition that now spans ten generations.
From its Spanish colonial roots to its modern revival as a picturesque Southern estate, Plantation Oaks Farms is more than a farm. It’s a legacy.
And we invite you to be part of the story.
